I have been watching the DC Bloom Watch like a hawk this year. Initially it posted the peak bloom date as April 1st, so I went down on March 31st and the blossoms were spectacular. It was like walking through a dream. Last year the blooms blew away so quickly that I barely had a chance to enjoy them, so I didn’t want to let the opportunity slip away this year. I went again on April 6 and what a difference 6 days made. Most of the blooms had fallen away. There were some tucked away safely on tree trunks and under overpasses that seemed intact.

I can’t help but stand in awe of all the history that has taken place here. And the beauty of the structure is a sight to behold. I recommend going before sunrise or after sunset to appreciate the stillness. After 21 months here, I’ve finally found a quick route out of DC… Down New York Avenue and on to Interstate 66. Otherwise you end up waiting for the hundreds of tourists crossing streets when you have the right of way. Traffic is a bit nutty in DC, especially during broad daylight. Only 14 months left here, then we are off to wherever the Navy decides it needs my husband (crossing my fingers that we make a beeline back to San Diego… my SoCal blood can’t hack the cold winters anymore. But I sure do love the snow. I know, strange).

And because I am so tickled about spring, I’m offering a BOGO special this week. Buy one session, get a 2nd session free (both must be redeemed by May 2011). This special covers session time and editing only. Prints and digital files are sold separately. You can keep the 2nd session for yourself or gift it to a friend or family member that lives within 30 miles of Loudoun County. Please be sure to let them know their session needs to be scheduled before May 2011.

According to our pedometers, we’ve walked about 20 miles shoveling snow off our driveway. I started yesterday morning while my husband was at work. Then we took 2 hour shift turns when he got home. He was up shoveling at 1 a.m., bless his heart. We were at it again this morning, but it still doesn’t look like we touched the driveway. It’s coming down hard and fast. But I still love every bit of it. The igloo that we built on our sidewalk yesterday was wiped away by the snow plows early this morning. My husband says maybe they thought they were doing us a favor. It looked like a big blob by 1 a.m. because of all the snow that came down after we’d gone inside. They are predicting another 9 hours or more of snowfall. A break on Sunday and Monday, then more snow Tuesday and Wednesday. Haha… I find it very amusing. The kids measured 18 inches this morning. It’ll be interesting to see what the full depth will be by the end of this storm. And I’ve come to discover that inhaling snowflakes is one of the oddest things I’ve ever experienced. The cold makes your body numb, so you don’t realize how sore you are until you come inside, toss your wet clothes and gloves in the dryer, defrost, and take a break. When you’re out there shoveling, you switch to autopilot. Just trying to clear a path for your car to get out in case of any emergencies. We’re not in SoCal anymore Toto! =)

It was a small, intimate affair with 20 guests and the bride was breathtaking… like a starlet straight out of a 1940′s movie. The groom was dapper in his duds, the perfect compliment to his lovely lady. It was a deceptively gorgeous, sunny day and they braved the 12 degree wind chill after the ceremony. Brrr… but it was totally worth it. Special thanks to my fellow photographer Elizabeth Leighton for helping me document their special day. Here is a sneak peek…

This morning I met up with Mitch, Kelly, and Riley (a fellow Navy family) in D.C. Little Miss Riley was an absolute happy ray of sunshine. No doubt about it. She sang the Smurfs theme song for me… we jumped, twirled, threw leaves, and danced. So much fun. She is going to be a big sister very soon. Mom Kelly is due to deliver a baby sister on Christmas Eve!

Being a Southern California transplant, I never understood the love of four seasons. I was happy with our average 70-something year-round temps. But dag nabit if fall and spring aren’t breathtakingly gorgeous here in Virginia. It’s like someone took a paintbrush and used the landscape as their canvas. The way the wind rustles the leaves up and off the trees, dancing through the air in a Broadway musical of colors. We drove up to Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park late yesterday to catch a glimpse of the myriad of colors, kissed by the cotton candy sky just before the sun set upon the horizon. There were lines of cars itching to get through the gate and on their way along Skyline Drive. Families were camped out at the visitor center not far from the Front Royal Entrance. Kids were scooping leaves into piles and diving in, or throwing them high in the air. Families laughing and taking snapshots… there was this warm feel-good spirit floating through the air. This is living. Basking in the beauty of nature. The transition of seasons truly is something to behold. It’s magical.

If you have some time, jump in your car and drive up there. Don’t forget to pack your camera, batteries, media card, snacks, drinks, and cold weather gear. A 1-7 day pass is only $15. A Shenandoah Annual Pass is $30. An annual pass to all the national parks is $80. If you have a handicap pass, you can get in for free. Find out more information on fees here.

I’ve known Alexis since she was a wee little toddler. I used to babysit her and her two siblings while I was in high school. She was a little bruiser of a tomboy, with dimples that would knock your socks off. She has grown into a beautiful, educated young woman… and held on tight to those dimples. She met and fell in love with Clint while they were at UC Davis. When she called me about a year ago to tell me she wanted to hire me as her wedding photographer, I was so honored. She flew me out to San Diego (my hometown) for the rehearsal and wedding. It was a perfect weekend filled with sunshine, blue skies, and perfect mid-70′s temperatures. Congratulations to Alexis and Clint. I look forward to watching your own family grow. Enjoy your sneak peek! All my love to you both – Ingrid.

The last 5 days in SoCal have been a whirlwind of work and activities, but it’s been such a blast being back home and reconnecting with old friends. I have so much to blog about and photos to share. The abbreviated version…

Day 1: flew to San Diego, picked up my best friend Miki, stopped in to see my mom and her new pup, drove to Korea Town (Convoy), had Korean food at Tofu House, Boba Tea at Tapioca Express, met my bride (Alexis) and groom (Clint) down at the lifeguard tower in Coronado, met up with my friend Carrie and Jen (and her lovely mom) at the new Corvette Diner location in Pt. Loma (Where the former Naval Training Center used to be, next to the Marine Corps Depot near the airport), drove to Rancho Bernardo to hug my friend Ashley goodbye before she moved to San Francisco.

Day 2: Spa day @the Walden Ashe Spa in Mission Hills, compliments of my AWESOME husband (he bought me a gift certificate back in 2002… only took me 7 years to use it), shopping with my mom at the revamped Plaza Bonita, rehearsal and dinner with my bride/groom and their respective families, then crashed hard that night from exhaustion.

Day 3: Costco for batteries, wedding at the Kona Kai Resort at Shelter Island overlooking the San Diego bay and city skyline, night out on the town with my friends at the Shout House (dueling piano bar that is FANTASTIC) in downtown San Diego.

Day 4: Schlepped my way up to LA to meet up with my fabulouso friend and fashion photographer Amanda Brooks and her daughter, took the city bus down to Hollywood to check out all the touristy spots, ate at Mel’s Diner, picked up touristy Hollywood t-shirts, hiked up to the Hollywood Hills sporting said touristy t-shirts, took photos in front of and behind the Hollywood sign (do not do this in hot weather… it’s a helluva hike), then crashed hard at Amanda’s house.

Day 5: Grabbed coffee at the local celebrity grocery store, see one star I kinda recognize, but can’t for the life of me remember her name (duh), drive over to my friend Beth’s house and grab breakfast with her and her family, back to Beth’s house, meet up with my other friends Rachel and Cathleen, get mic’d for an episode of International House Hunters (Rachel moved from LA to Melbourne, so she was the star. Beth, Cathleen, and I were the extras.), sushi for dinner in Culver City, pit stop at Downtown Disney to pick up Tinkerbell schwag for my daughter, then back down to San Diego.

So that’s my last 5 days in a nutshell. Only 5 days left to go and I miss my children terribly. I have a lot of photos and videos from my trip that I will post when I get a quiet minute, but I’ve been on the go, non-stop. I even have videos of the film crew filming us. It’s been a surreal and fun trip thus far. I have a week filled with work and grabbing grub at my hometown faves.
